AMATEURISM

Heidelberger Kunstverein

The Heidelberger Kunstverein presents AMATEURISM an international group exhibition with participation of fourteen artists. The exhibition examines the phenomenon of amateurism in contemporary art, in which artists go beyond the boundaries of existing categories, disciplines, and institutions, navigated by their curiosity. In association with a tradition of dilettant, the ›amateur‹ has been considered one of those cultural figures whose ›pure‹ and selfless love for particular objects, or arts. By contrast, professionals are those who are ›only in it for the money‹. However, society has gone through a significant transformation over the last centuries, brought by the influence of the global mobility, of capitalism, and the development of different forms of industries and technologies with network connectivity. This certainly affects a dichotomous concept such as that of amateur/professional. The exhibition begins with the pre-avant-garde works created by the Incohérents Art Movement (1882–1896 / France), which manifested ›Do what you are not professional in!‹ Taking an analytical look at use of the notion of amateur, the exhibition juxtaposes the works by the movement with the ones by contemporary artists from the 1950s to the present. A unique assemblage of objects and art works creates a dialogue, which indicates the different use of the notion, and it is simply not possible to categorize what amateur/professional is by existing standards. The exhibition presents a shift of meaning of amateur in the past and an expansion of imaginations about what amateurism could mean in contemporary society, by situating itself in between disciplines, fields, categories and norms.

IM-PORT// EX-PORT

Kassel

IM-PORT//EX-PORT
A Floating Platform for Art and Science
From April to October 2012, a decommissioned ship will be transformed into the MS IM-PORT//EX-PORT, a transdisciplinary platform for art, architecture, design & science on the river Fulda.
The IM-PORT//EX-PORT initiative, represented by Andre May, Lessano Negussie and Nicolai Kudielka, will make the main, upper and sun decks available for exhibitions, lectures, workshops and collaborative work. The goal of this transdisciplinary project, directed by Prof. Heike Klussmann, is to bring artists, scientists, students and teachers together in a
singular location. The guiding theme is the concept of exchange—of life in a state of flow. In a process of investigation and imagination, various fields will be made accessible through dialogue with other disciplines. The project relies on the self-directed participation of representatives of the arts and the sciences. The main concern of IM-PORT//EX-PORT is to generate and harness mutual inspiration from art, science and technology—their inherent similarities, parallel developments and differences—and to explore work processes and procedures. The ship, which was retired after 40 years of passenger vessel service, offers a unique set of amenities at a riverside site in the center of Kassel.
The event and exhibition space is approved for up to 150 persons. During dOCUMENTA (13), it will provide a unique interface between the university, its art school, the city of Kassel and the international public.
IM-PORT//EX-PORT is a featured site of the city’s official Kassel Kultur 2012 program in conjunction with documenta. We look forward to welcoming you aboard the IM-PORT//EX-PORT!

DysCrete™ - energy producing sculptures

Heidelberger Kunstverein

The series of energy producing sculptures is based on the principles of the dye-sensitized solar cell, that use organic dyes to absorb light and produce electricity through electrochemical reactions. The energy-generating function is produced with freely available components, with no additional toxic emissions. A special feature is that it can make use of the energy in diffuse light.

Studies in Material Thinking

In their contrtibution to SMT #8, Heike Klussmann and Thorsten Klooster describe the development of BlingCrete™ – Materials Development as Transdisciplinary Research Process

Studies in Material Thinking is an international journal that reports on the peer reviewed work of artists, designers and writers. It is a vehicle to support the communication and critique of artistic and design research from the vantage point of both the materiality and the poetics of creative research. The journal aims to develop a series of divergent positions, critical approaches and contestations around the term ‘material thinking’, centred as it is on an understanding of making, invention, design, creative practice and research methodology.
